Tag: London Cup 2011

The capacity crowd at Chiswick, on the last day of the London Cup were treated to two exciting matches. With 14 goals, ten from open play and a deft display of close skills by hat-trick man, Nam Yong Lee or Lee 'New York' as he has come to be known it was well worth the visit.

England left it until the second half in the 3rd/4th playoff to really show their true potential and prove why they are ranked 4th in the World.

England recover some pride in Chiswick by beating off the Black Sticks with a 3-1 victory and a solid performance.

England crash out the London Cup

England will not be playing in the final of the inaugural London Cup after losing 5-4 to Korea in an exciting match at the University of Westminster ground in Chiswick.

The highlights of the game were a flicked finish into the roof of the net from a narrow angle by skipper Barry Middleton (to make the score 4-3 to England) and Nam Yong Lee's volleyed finish of an aerial.

England face vital match with Korea after loss to Belgium

Belgium hadn't read the script on day one of the London Cup.

England raced to a 2-0 lead in their cup opener cheered on by a large crowd. But the Belgians rallied to score just before half time and then added three unanswered second-half goals to run away with a comfortable win.

England's goals came from a fine reverse-shot by Richard Alexander and a deflection on a Glenn Kirkham strike by skipper Barry Middleton.

Paumen hat-trick sets up dramatic Netherland's Champions Trophy win

Three first-half goals in the final from Champions Trophy holders Argentina stunned the home crowd at the Wagener Stadium in Amsterdam.

But Dutch hockey captain Maartje Paumen raised the roof with a penalty corner goal after the half-time hooter, then chucked in two more corners to set up extra time.

Withthe scores still locked at 3-3 the 2011 Chhampions Trophy final eventually went to one-vs-one eight seconds to score penalties and the Netherlands held their nerve to score three penalties to two.

More to come.

England secure GB Champions Trophy place for 2012

A 2-0 win for England over Australia in the fifth/sixth place playoff game has secured a Champions Trophy place for Great Britain in Argentina in 2012.

That tournament has already been written in as vital Olympic preparation by all the top sides so relegation, and hoping for the posibility of an FIH nomination for the Rosario tournament, would not have been a great outcome from the 2011 Champions Trophy campaign.
