Ireland’s national women’s Hockey coach, Gene Muller, has today announced his decision to retire from Irish Hockey.

South African born Muller took over the reins from Riet Kuper in October 2006 to become Ireland’s first full-time women’s coach taking the team through a period of dramatic change during his time. Among his many achievements Muller moved the team to a Central Preparation Program to engage in a more professional set up and secured Ireland women their first ever Olympic Qualifier final.

Ireland to play Belgium in final of women's hockey Olympic qualifier

Ireland secured its spot in Sunday’s Olympic qualifier final with a 3-2 win against Spain. The win also secured Belgium’s place in the final game as both Ireland and Belgium are unbeaten with 12 points.

The final will be played at 3.30pm UK time (4.30pm local) in Kontich, Belgium. See http://www.fih.livesport.tv for live streaming (£2.99).

The demise of Spain at this qualification event has been a complete surprise as the Spaniards came in as the top-seeded team at the tournament and favorites with a 11th place in the FIH World Ranking. Instead Spain’s offense sputtered in its last three games, as it’s scored just four goals in its last three games.

Australia women's coach Adam Commens said the Hockeyroos were tired after a heavy training block during the series and “couldn’t keep up the intensity of the Argentinians after half time”. "When you get tired it gets a lot harder to execute the basics skills as you do at other times and today we made those errors when we were stationary."
