The journey home and an afterword about the EHL

I am now on the ferry waiting to be taken back to England. What an amazing weekend! I would recommend you all take the time and go to Holland to watch either the EHL or the various internationals that take place there. Firstly, it is only three and a half hours from Calais by car. The roads are flat and well sign posted. They are not that busy either. Then to the actual hockey itself, you are guaranteed packed stands and a real party atmosphere. There is Shell City for the kids: a whole turf with inflatables. A cross between a bouncy castle and hockey!

Grand Final

The EHL final of 2011 certainly did not disappoint. The stage was set with packed stands full of great supporters. The HGC home crowd was in fine voice with flares and drums every where. The start of the match was frantic with Campo nearly taking control of the match. They had lots of possession but did not reallly create any gilt edged chances. It was 0-0 at the end of the first quarter with no PCs for either side! It was actually nice to see a really high quality game that was not dominated by one side have a superior corner routine (Ric Charlesworth would be proud!).

Finals

Well what a glorious day for hockey, the sun is out and the stands are packed with supporters. Reading are to take on the other losing semi finalists Oranje Zwart. It proved to be an amazing game of hockey. The standard of play on show was fantastic. A very open game with both sides looking to score goals. Which was nice to see as sometimes the 3/4 play off games can amount to nothing. Oranje opened the scoring through Bob de Voogd with a field goal but Stephen Dick replied to level the scores.

Semi finals

The morning began in true Dutch fashion with cheese and ham rolls! Then off to HGC hockey club. Guess what, sun shining through the windows this morning then as soon as the car engine started the heavens opened! Once again torrential rain all morning! In fact it even hailed during the Reading game. Semi Final 1 Reading v Campo Final score was 3-0 to Campo, who in the end deserved to win the game. They grewn in strength and confidence as the game progressed. In fact it was 0-0 after the first quarter. Then Campo scored in each of the remaining quarters.

The journey from hell!

Made great time from the ferry: Bruges in under an hour. Then by Antwerp it all went pear shaped! A motorcyclist decided to argue with a lorry and we were held up for over an hour. Plus roadworks on the Antwerp ring road meant another hour's delay! So got into Holland at 10pm and not yet near the Hague! Torrential rain all the way, but you have to say the Dutch roads are fantastic as is the scenery, very inspiring. Finally arrived at 11pm! Time to get this Monkey to bed and ready for an intense day of hockey tomorrow!

Tyskies and tears on day four

A day on from England's 2:3 defeat by the Austrians I can still hardly believe the last few seconds.

A penalty corner and four retakes, and not one found its mark. It was very exciting, but ultimately disappointing and meant England played off for fifth place against Holland today.

But England's harsh loss was my gain as it meant Tom and I were free to go out for dinner last night.
