Tough at the top in the England Hockey League

Reading won the premier league clash 3-2 (c) Ian WoodIt was a tough weekend at the top in the England Hockey League with men's leaders East Grinstead losing their first premier league game of the season and Canterbury being knocked off top position in the women's league.

Reading did the damage on Sunday at Sonning Lane in what became a battle of the penalty corners. Richard Mantell punched in three for the home side, answered by corners from Gareth Carr and Glenn Kirkham for East Grinstead.

Three wins in a row has now pushed Reading into fourth place in the division.

East Grinstead still have a clear lead over Beeston at the top of the table after beating the Midlanders 5-1 in Nottingham on Saturday. Although the Bees closed the gap back to five points with a 6-2 home win over Brooklands MU on Sunday.

Rachel Clift (l, Olton & WW) and Jess Wood (Cannock) fight it out (c) Andy SmithMen's England Hockey League leaders East Grinstead dropped four points at home over the weekend, with last-minute goals producing 3-3 draws in both matches at Saint Hill. Meanwhile, second-placed Beeston narrowed the gap on the leaders with a 3-2 win against Hampstead and Westminster at Highfields.

Fixture carnage in the England Hockey League

The Big Chill hit England Hockey League premier division fixtures this weekend with only one women's fixture played on Saturday and the entire Sunday men's programme cancelled.
On Saturday Reading women produced their second league win in a row with a 6-2 home win over Cannock.

Big wins for Canterbury and East Grinstead at top of the leagues

Canterbury ladies and East Grinstead men both hit seven over the weekend to maintain their premier league top spots.
East Grinstead enjoyed a 7-1 home win over Cannock while Canterbury knocked over Olton and West Warwicks 7-2 on a trip to the midlands.
