Aussie blitzkrieg leads the way in Champions Trophy day one goalfest
Picture: Australia's Simon Orchard takes up the ball – Treeby Images
Germany 4 England 2
Australia 9 New Zealand 1
Netherlands 5 Spain 2
Australia blew their antipodean neighbours off the field to lead the table after day one at Mönchengladbach.
England made a pedestrian start in their game against hosts Germany and as a result were 4-0 down at half-time. Maybe the Germans backed off the gas a little but two second-half PC goals from Ashley 'Action' Jackson made a fight of it. Dan Fox missed a sitter and Simon Mantell was brilliantly tackled ten feet from goal by Max Muller in the last seconds. So all in all, things did get better.
The Netherlands--Spain game produced the best hockey of the day with Teun de Nooijer, in an unbelievable 16th Champions Trophy, netting one of the Netherlands five, which we think means he has scored in every Champions Trophy he has played in.
I'm stranded in the UK. The internet video from http://www.laola1.tv is pretty good so tune in for Netherlands-Australia at 2pm, Sunday and England-Spain at 4pm. The NZ-Germany game at 12noon, might be a struggle for the Kiwis who have marked themselves as the 'goal difference' side for the top teams in the tournament.
Matchsheets are attached below.
