It never rains but it pours – whatever that means. First goals rained in on the England net, then a torrentialhalf-time downpour delayed the restart by over an hour. As a lone sweeper tried to clear the centre circle, a team of six volunteers showed the clear benefits of a group working together towards a common purpose with six coordinated squeegees dispatching spectacular bow-waves of water off the VIP stand touchline to enthusiastic applause from the sheltering crowd.
Maybe the analogy wasn't lost on an England side down 3-0 to the Aussies.
So the tide was stemmed for a while in the second half before a strike from player of the tournament Jamie Dwyer with 15 minutes to go stretched the lead to an unbridgeable four goals. Silver for England, gold for the Australians.
Completely outplayed, simple as that. Well done Girt-by-Sea.
In the other games New Zealand were relegated to the Champions Challenge for 2011 after a 3-2 defeat by Spain.
In the middle game of the day, the Netherlands stuffed four past a lacklustre German side to take the bronze. The evergreen Teun de Nooijer chipped in with two (one stroke, one open play).
