Germany celebrates double gold in Poznan

Germany's men have retained their indoor world cup hockey title with  a 3-2 extra time win over hosts Poland. Earlier the German women also won a world title with a 4-2 win over the Netherlands.

Benjamin Wess scored the golden goal winner for the Germans in the fourth minute of extra time, tidying up after a shot from Moritz Furste. Earlier Poland had follwed their tournament pattern of racing to an early lead, through Dariusz Rachwalski and Thomas Gorny, then defending resolutely.

In fairness, Germany were worthy champions for their calmness and creativity under enormous pressure from the Poles, both on the court and in the crowd. The German regular-time goals came from Matthias Witthaus (15m) and Oskar Deecke (33). Only spectatcular second-half keeping from Mariusz Chyla kept the Poles in the game under the onslaught.

Polish coach Karol Sniezek said that while they were disapponted right now  to have lost, the silver medal was a fantastic result for Poland and "we will be happy".
