Australia, New Zealand and India win their final games in Rosario
New Zealand 3 China 0
India 4 South Africa 3
Australia 2 Korea 1
The non-medal positions have been decided at the women's hockey world cup in Rosario.
The Hockeyroos took fifth place with a late penalty corner winner from Nicole Arrold. A beautiful lift over the defender's stick and strike from Korea's Kim Young Ran would have been worthy of winning any match. But Australia equalised when Casey Eastham deflected in a penalty corner just before half time and then took the match, and fifth place overall, with Arrold's 68th minute drag flick..
A lively New Zealand outplayed China in the seventh/eighth place match. An excellent hit from the top of the circle by Krystal Forgesson, set the Kiwis on their way – she was beautifully set up by a Gemma Flynn pass from the left. Then Charlotte Harrison added a sliding finish and Clarissa Eshuis a powerful PC. Job done Olympic silver medallists despatched, there is so much to admire about this Kiwi team.
Free-scoring India put away South Africa in the 9th/10th game. Sixteen-year-old Rani Rampal netting two to take her tournament total to seven.
Delays from heavy rain pushed the Hockeyroos Korea game back, but a still impressive crowd of several thousand stayed around for the 11pm finish.
