Great Britain defeat Ireland at Investec London Cup
Great Britain defeated Ireland 3-0 to take fifth place in the Investec London Cup hockey. The game didn't reach the heights of Saturday's semi-finals but good moments included Emily Maguire's first international goal – from a straight hit corner – and a first half brace in close from Hannah Macleod.
Coach Danny Kerry was unhappy with the performance. "I was really disappointed with today to be frank. I have constant conversations with players – the penny needs to drop with some of them. Our skill execution was poor and we should be them to the sword. It should have been a cricket score."
With Crista Cullen and Kate Walsh absent injured, GB's corner threat was limited at the Investec London Cup. Kerry said: "I saw Crista in training the other day – watch out world I can say."
"I've learnt we can't rebound – we will be working on that."
On the Olympic preparation: "The work has been done it is a matter of keeping them where they need to be. We are not going there to be Olympians we are there to play our hearts out."
Skipper Kate Walsh remains the main Olympic squad injury concern because of the nature of the injury. She had an allergic reation to some ankle tape and a subsequent infection. The nature of the injury is a bit of an unknown – compared to acute injuries such as Cullen, Sarah Thomas (both ankles) and Alex Danson (shoulder), all of whom are expected to be fit.
