1-1 Blacksticks vs Korea in opening test
The Black Sticks have opened their six-test series against Korea with a tight 1-1 draw at Rangitoto College today. Both sides scored one goal each in the first half but were unable to deliver the killer blow in a goalless yet entertaining second half. Hugo Inglis scored New Zealand’s only goal in the 16th minute before Nam Yong Lee drew Korea level just before the halftime whistle. Neither side was able to add to the ledger in an increasingly defensive second half.Head coach Colin Batch was pleased with the overall effort from his side and is looking forward to progressing throughout the series.
“We have some things to work on but it was an ok first up effort. Korea is a fast counter attacking side so our defensive effort against that was good to see in the second half,” Batch said.
Captain Dean Couzins had a good game in defence before copping a nasty blow just below the knee.
Young Aucklander Alex Shaw provided great cover at the back with Couzins off the field while Devon Manchester played a solid game in goal and made several critical saves.
The Black Sticks have tomorrow off before the second test against Korea at Rangitoto College on Thursday at 2pm.
