No upsets in the women's world league semi finals
It was no surprise, despite the competition format, that the four top seeds in the Rabo Bank women's world league semi finals in Rotterdam have made the last stages.
World number one and host Netherlands will meet New Zealand in the semi-final game after earning a clear 8-1 win over India in today’s quarterfinal match-up. The other semi-final game will feature Korea against Germany.
Korea also claimed their berth in the semi final round with a strong, physical performance against Belgium. Even though the Belgium's scored after the first minute, Korea played a typical tactically strong game and managed to come out winners 2-1 by the final whistle. It should be noted that the Belgium women women were the only team of the 32 men’s and women’s teams to play in both Round 1 and Round 2 events.
Germany also joined the party by coming out victorious with a 2-0 win against 18th ranked Chile. However it was not an easy ride and the Chileans put up a valiant effort to leave the German fans biting their nails until the last few minutes of the game when Marie Mavers signalled the start of the celebrations with a sliding penalty corner goal.
So the format for the next games on Thursday 20th June is as follows and can be seen live on the FIH youtube channel.
Placement 5-8: India vs. Japan – 12:30
Placement 5-8: Belgium vs. Chile – 14:30
Semi-Final: Korea vs. Germany – 17:00
