Great Britain smashed out of medal contention by resurgent Spain
GREAT BRITAIN 1 (1)
Barry Middleton 23 (PC)
Great Britain’s hopes of a Champions Trophy medal were dashed as they went down 8-1 to clinical Spain in their final Pool A fixture in Auckland.
Great Britain took the lead in the 23rd minute when skipper Barry Middleton shoved in a corner rebound. But Spain hit back with four quick open play goals to lead 4-1 at the break.
Looking for positives, Harry Martin again looked good on the ball ans was one of the few GB players who could consistently take the ball past some accomplished Spanish defenders. And Ben Hawes looks like he is coming back into his best form (despite one bad mistake that cost a goal).
Otherwise the less said the better. George Pinner suffered the undeserved indignity of picking the ball out of the net eight times on his Champions Trophy debut.GB will now face Germany and Korea in the relegation pool. They carry through three points (from a win against Pakistan) and must win the pool to avoid the risk of relegation to the Champions Challenge (for England).
Great Britain head coach Jason Lee said: “We did well to get ahead in the game and then conceded two of the softest goals you’ll ever see. We found ourselves chasing the game from then on. Our skill and execution were very poor.”
