RICHARD DOCHERTY INDOOR CUP 2012
On the 27th of June 2010 a truly charismatic and talented member of the Scottish Hockey community sadly, tragically and suddenly passed away at the tender age of 27. Richard was a huge character in the lives of his family, friends and the members of Inverleith Hockey Club.
To all who knew him, it was very clear that his memory must never be forgotten therefore an Indoor Hockey Tournament and supporting Diabetes UK Scotland were seen as suitable and fitting ways to do that. So over the past 18 months Inverleith Hockey club has worked alongside Richard’s family to create an Indoor Event that will encompass Richard’s character, style and be a true celebration of his life.
It is with great pride and excitement that Inverleith Hockey Club can announce the first ever Richard Docherty Indoor Cup will take place on the weekend of Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th January 2012 at the newly built [EN]GAGE Sports Centre which is part of the Edinburgh Napier University, Sighthill Campus.
This event will be a six team tournament with International, Club and specially selected teams from Scotland, Holland, Germany and Wales taking part. As well as the indoor tournament, the weekend will see a Coaching Conference and Auction Dinner also taking place. All these events are intended to help raise money for Diabetes UK Scotland, which is the chosen charity of Richard’s Family.
Because of the incredible support this event has been shown by our key partners including Activcity, Apex Hotels, [EN]GAGE Sports Centre, Stevenson College and DITA UK, entry tickets and delegates spaces on the Coaching Courses will be COMPLETELY FREE to everyone who wishes to attend, however we would ask that you give a donation at the venue to Diabetes UK Scotland if you can. This is a fantastic opportunity for the Scottish Hockey Community to see some of the world’s greatest players both past and present. The tournament alone can claim to have players with a combined total of over 1500 International caps and 40 International Medals including World and Olympic Champions.
Scotland will be represented at the tournament by the National Men’s Indoor squad who will be in their final preparations for the EuroHockey Indoor Nations Trophy and last season’s top two club sides Menzieshill HC and newly crowned National Champions Inverleith HC. The event will also see International standard opposition in the form of the Welsh National Men’s Indoor squad who have kindly agreed to support this event. From the home of indoor hockey in Germany, Grossflottbecker THGC of Hamburg will add quality Bundesliga opposition with a number of the gold medal winning German Side from the 2008 Beijing Olympics present. The final team is a newly formed Dutch side called HC RDG which has been put together by Richard’s brother Laurence specifically for the event. Alongside Olympian Laurence, this team includes all-time Dutch greats Taco Van Der Honert and Floris Jan Bovelander, triple Spanish Olympian Rodrigo Garza and many more world class Dutch players as well as being coached by Current Netherlands Women’s Head Coach Max Caldas which will certainly make this team one of the big draws in the tournament.
There will also be an opportunity for the coaches within Scotland to attend five, 1 hour seminars hosted by some of the world-class stars competing in the event, where they will discuss keys areas of the modern hockey game in terms of both indoor and outdoor hockey. This is truly a one off opportunity and should not be missed by any aspiring hockey coaches.
The Intention was to create a free, Family Friendly event that will provide something for everybody and Inverleith HC sincerely believes this has been achieved. It is hoped this event will be well received and supported by the Scottish Hockey community and we will be able to raise a significant sum of money for Diabetes UK Scotland.
