Oxford and Cambridge top GB medal table

April 30, 2012:To mark the start of Universities Week 2012  a new report launched today reveals the statistics behind Team GB’s medallists for the last twenty years. Analysis shows that Team GB Olympic medallists are twice as likely to have gone to university as the UK population as a whole. Sixty one per cent of medallists have been to university compared to 31 per cent of the population who have a degree.

Megan Frazer wins top US college hockey award

Derry's  Megan Frazer of the University of Maryland field hockey team has won the 2011-12 Honda Sports Award, designating her as the top student-athlete in the country in that sport.

The honor was based on the results of national balloting among 1,000 NCAA member schools as part of the Collegiate Women Sports Awards program, now in its 36th year.

Frazer is now eligible to become a "Top Three" finalist for Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year.

Loughborough and Birmingham win University titles

Loughborough University men and Birmingham University's women won the BUCS PwC Championship hockey titles at Abbeydale, Sheffield on Thursday.

Loughbourough defeated Durham University 2-1 in the men's final. University of Birmingham defeated Loughbourough 3-0 in the women's championship game.

Oxford retain Varsity hockey titles

The women's match finished 1-1 after Cambridge's Kirsty Elder equalised a Sarah Ffrench Constant goal. The cup could have been heading east however, with Jess Anand shooting high and wide for the underdogs late in the second half, having harried the Oxford defence into a turnover. As holders, Oxford retain the trophy.

The men's match was more one-sided with Oxford running out 5-2 winners.
